Although scores of well-intentioned parents, grandparents, midwives, daycare providers, and concerned citizens certainly will advise you, no one can presume to tell you the best diaper. You must wrestle with The Great Diaper Dilemma, weighing conscience against convenience, occasionally considering your child’s comfort, and reach your own conclusion. Advanced philosophers discuss “heuristics,” your truth-tests or principles of evaluation and judgment. On those, the factions typically agree. Pro-cloth and pro-disposable advocates measure diapers’ value by: (1) cost and convenience; (2) the baby’s comfort; (3) most earth-friendly and eco-sensitive; and (4) style and attractiveness. Among some factions, numbers three and four count equally.
For the sake of discussion, remember $1200. According to baby-economists-not babies who are economists, but those economists who measure and quantify all things infant-you will invest at least $1200 in diapers before your baby decides she has grown mature and dignified enough to use the big-girl apparatus. The baby economists also report that, no matter which option you choose, you will spend about the same amount of money; they have the wisdom to allow for the value of your time and the cost of your aggravation. Your calculations may vary.
Although she has not gained full command of language, the baby very articulately will let you know whether she feels comfortable and if her diapers are the best. Your own common sense may guide you, too. Would you like to crawl around all day wearing some soggy thing that weighed more than you do and had a tendency to let foreign liquids and solids run down your legs and thighs? Many mothers express great surprise that baby’s first word so seldom is “elastic.”
Although disposable diapers always have seemed the villains in this epic contest, serious researchers find that cloth and disposable diapers have approximately the same environmental impact. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, cloth diapers win the style contest. Twenty-first century cloth diapers now come with haute couture wrappers, which improve the fit and certainly make a fashion statement. It is never too early to add the glam.
